We have been learning about various celebrations in our LearnTogether curriculum. We learned all about the stories and traditions of Hannukkah and Christmas. Then we made Hanukkah Menorah and Christmas Stockings!
After a couple of weeks of scientific observation, the time came to examine our eggs one last time. We had placed hard boiled eggs in a variety of drinks (water, tea, coffee, cola, diet cola, orange juice and an empty cup as a control) to examine the impact of these drinks on our teeth - since the shell of an egg is like the enamel of our teeth. We were very suprised at the how stained the drinks made the eggs and therefore our teeth - so we decided to get a toothbrush to investigate the difference brushing your teeth can make after you drink these drinks. The difference was very interesting. The coffee stain was very difficult to wash off the eggshell. Meanwhile the impact of the drink themselves were astounding - the orange juice totally dissolved the shell of the egg due to the acid in the juice. The diet cola ate through one whole layer of the shell leaving an odd textured layer beneath the outer part of the shell. We discovered that some drinks stain your teeth very badly, while others break down the layers of the enamel of your teeth. The only drink that made no difference to the eggshell, and therefore our teeth, was water! So we've decided to try really hard to bring only water to school as it is the best drink for our teeth! Following on from all our fabulous work on the theme of food we learned about the Pop Art movement as lead by artist Andy Warhol. We loved his use of bright colours and his food themed art. Then we explored the process of printmaking - First we sketched our image then we etched into onto a styrofoam plate. Next we covered the plate with paint and printed it onto paper. While the print dried we added more detail to our plate by altering the etching. Then we overprinted it onto the original print. We had great fun and learned a new art skill! We think our display looks wonderful!
We have been working very hard on a song and poem for our part in the Winter Performance on Friday. We hope you can make it! Here we are during rehearsals - working so hard!
We were so lucky to have a special workshop from Simply Music today. Paul hass worked on many famous movies creating the musical soundtrack. We had lots of fun learning about instruments, rhythm and music in general. We especially loved having a go with some of the instruments! We are really concentrating during our conversation stations trying our best to stay on topic as we communicate with our friends! We are amazing artists! We were so excited to see our drawings framed on display in the school art exhibition this morning. The pieces will be on show all next week and are available to purchase too. |
