We had such a great adventure today! The sun was shining and we were all wrapped up in our winter clothes as we headed off on our supermarket field trip. We walked down to Tyrrelstown village, putting all our road safety knowledge to excellent use. When we got to Lidl - we firstly walked around the various areas or zones of the shop - diary, fruit & vegetable, bread, meat etc. We discussed what foods we would find in each section and what type of storage is used for different types of food - shelves, fridges or freezers. We identified whether foods were natural or processed based on what we had learned in class. We also listed the people involved in making various types of food - e.g. a farmer and a baker are involved in making bread. We also listed the types of foods that we get from certain sources e.g. Animals: pork - sausages, bacon, chorizo etc; Crops: wheat - bread, cereal, pastries, etc. We examined information labels to find out when foods would go off and we identified the price tags on food so we would know how much they each cost. Then we got into three shopping teams - Aoife, Jen & Conor led one team each. Every team was given a shopping list and €10 to buy the items on the list. We had to start off by getting a shopping basket and then we read our shopping lists - we discussed which zones in the supermarket we would find the items on our list and off we went, taking turns holding the basket and the shopping list. When we were finished we went to the checkout and asked the shop assistant if we could buy the items in our basket. We used excellent manners, speaking and listening skills to buy our food. Then we walked back to school taking turns to carry the shopping bags. We can't wait to use all the food we bought for some fun History, Science and English activities over the next few days!
